Ros’s Volunteering Story

How long have you been a Volunteer?

I have been volunteering exclusively with LLTF for over 12 months now.

Why did you begin volunteering?

My premmie journey was made more difficult and stressful due to lack of resources and support networks.  I wanted to make sure that other families travelling on the same journey have support and access to information.   By volunteering with LLTF, I can help spread the information and provide counselling and support for parents in similar situations.  Nothing beats firsthand experience when it comes to providing support to other families.

Briefly describe the work you do in your volunteering role?

My job within LLTF is varied and exciting.  At the moment I help with our social media message and posting messages that get sent into us on our Facebook page.  I also provide support to families via phone and email contact.  I am also helping in the creating new services for families in NICU & Special Care Units.

What do you get out of volunteering?

I get a massive sense of satisfaction and happiness when I am able to provide support for families.  Sometimes just providing an ear for them to talk to, or a shoulder to cry on is enough.  They just need to know that someone is there to help them.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering?

Do it!  Volunteering is an extremely rewarding task to be involved in, and you are making an impact on the community by making it a better place.  Also it can be a two way street, as you can make new friends which can also provide support for yourself during difficult times. Don’t forget that volunteering is also a great way to meet new people.  I have made special friends for life through my volunteering activities.
