Meet Marlo, Hugh, and baby Elliot – Queensland Walk for Prems 2024 ambassadors 💜
“Elliot was born at 33 weeks and 5 days after I experienced PROM (premature rupture of membranes) on the last night of our babymoon in Yamba.
“I spent five hours in the back of three different ambulances driving up and down the coast finding a hospital that could accept me at 33 weeks’ gestation.
“Finally we arrived at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s where I was originally listed to give birth.
“45 minutes later, Elliot arrived, weighing 2332 grams. It was a very traumatic experience.
“He was whisked off to NICU immediately, no skin to skin, no holds.
“He was in NICU for five days before I got my first hold of my son.
“When you’re sitting in the special care nursery it’s hard to imagine anyone understands what you’re going through.
“So to have Life’s Little Treasures Foundation approach me and say ‘Hey, how are you going? This is a little something from us. We’re having a coffee in the kitchen if you want to join,’ was really like an olive branch that I needed in that moment.
“It made me feel seen, my struggles were very real.
“Eventually, with time, Elliot got stronger and we got out of there and we started living our life as a new family.
“But every day when I was in it, I just wanted it to be done. I wanted to get out of there.
“I wanted to get home and start the next chapter as a mum with a baby on oxygen.
“But eventually – it all passed.”
